How to Get
a Grant
With the average repair costs shown in the applications we receive now in excess of £128,000 and increasing every year, decisions about how we allocate our limited funds are always difficult. To help those applying for grants, we have developed two straightforward application packs – ‘General’ covers structural repair work for which we award Cornerstone, Standard and Foundation grants, and ‘Facilities’ deals with facilities and access improvements which are covered by our Facilities grants.

Before you request either pack, it is important to make sure your project will be eligible by checking you meet the following criteria:
  1. All church buildings must be over 100 years old to qualify for a grant from the Trust. However, Anglican churches of any age which belong to the Church of England or the Church in Wales can apply to the Incorporated Church Building Society which works alongside the National Churches Trust for grants;
  2. All churches must be open for regular public worship, be in England or Wales and belong to a denomination that is itself a member of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland;
  3. All projects must be overseen by an architect who is either ARB, RIBA or AABC accredited, or by a chartered surveyor who is RICS accredited; and
  4. The work must cost more than £4,000 before VAT and fees.

Please be aware that the Trust cannot make grants for certain purposes including:
  • Non-church buildings (such as church halls and vicarages)
  • Bell repairs
  • Organ repairs
  • Repairs to internal furnishings
  • Redecoration, other than after structural repairs
  • Clock repairs
  • Monument repairs
  • Wall painting restoration
Further details and comprehensive guidelines are included with both application packs. Once you have identified the appropriate pack, simply right–click either general application pack, or facilities pack to download the relevant forms in Microsoft Excel. If you prefer to use Microsoft Word, then please right-click Word general application pack, or Word facilities pack.

We must stress that failure to include full information and supporting documents as requested will result in a delay to your application. Please read the forms carefully and provide as much relevant detail as possible to help us in processing your grant decision.
